It is one of the younger islands of Galapagos, has an area of 130 km2 and a height of 343 meters above sea level. Marchena original use is scientific. Has a lot of volcanic activity, although the only eruption on record occurred in 1992.

Marchena is located near the island of Pinta Island in the northern part of the Galapagos Archipelago. It is a desolate place and has no fresh water sources, therefore has never been inhabited and its flora and fauna have been altered by wild animals or introduced plants.

His name is in honor of Fray Antonio de Marchena, who was the first to visit the island. Marchena is home to several endemic species such as mockingbirds, Galapagos Hawk and the Lizard Lava, which is typical of Island Marchena. There is also a significant number of California sea lions.

Apparently, turtles have never inhabited Marchena Island. Marchena is an island of interesting geological formation. Only 25% of the total land area is covered with vegetation. Like many islands, Marchena is a caldera, but the caldera of the island is almost completely filled with young lavas, some of which have been splashed and spilled over its banks. The oldest lavas have 500.000 years.

Like Floreana, Marchena is famous for its stories, it is said here on the coast mysteriously disappeared the bodies of Rudolf Lorenz and the captain of the ship.
Marchena has no open sites to visit, but all around there are great places for diving.
